Understand a specially prepared medicine.

A pharmacist or doctor may prepare or change a medicine rather than supply a ready-made product. Ask why this is being proposed for your needs.

Ask why this preparation is being proposed

Which part of my care calls for a specially prepared medicine?

Which standard product was considered, and why does it not fit?

What is the preparing pharmacy’s name, and which state record covers that work?

What written information would come with it?

Made for a need is different from approved

Compounding means preparing or changing a medicine through a pharmacist, physician or registered facility instead of using a finished drug-maker product.

Compounded drugs reach the market without FDA review of their safety, quality or effectiveness, according to the position checked September 26, 2026.

An approved product may be unavailable or may not fit a particular patient’s medical need; FDA identifies those as reasons to consider compounding.

Ask about copies without assuming the answer

The pharmacy copy rule limits making medicines that amount to copies of products already sold. It bars doing so routinely or in unusually large amounts. That was the rule checked September 26, 2026.

A changed medicine for an identified patient can fall outside that copy rule. The prescriber must judge that, for this patient, the alteration makes a significant difference compared with the product already sold.

Ask the clinician to explain the specific need in ordinary words. A lower advertised bill does not answer that question.

For a compounded injection sent into Massachusetts

Sterile means free of living germs.

For preparations sent from outside Massachusetts, the state checked on September 30, 2026 required a separate licence or registration for sterile compounding. An ordinary pharmacy licence alone did not cover that work.

Ask the pharmacy which state record covers the preparation being sent, rather than stopping at its business name.

The federal notes explain the product distinction. The state law adds checks for preparations sent into Massachusetts.
